5 Ways To Protect Your Energy as an Empath

A lot of you out there are empathic, heart-centered folks who desire healing others and changing the world.

Being one of those myself, I’ve learned a lesson I’m sure you’ll recognize.

It is EASY to get caught up in people’s stories.

Your friend calls to vent about their partner, your co-worker had a horrible time getting to work, your mom seems upset, but you can’t figure out why. As an empath, it’s understandable that you want to be nice and helpful. You would like to fix their situation and make them feel better.

You’ve probably learned to jump into the sinking boat with them. You take on their feelings and find your own feelings getting sour. You slip into scarcity, distrust, and taking things personally along with them, when if you’d just stop for a second to look around, you’d see you’re standing on the shore and holding a rope. Jumping in with them is actually the least helpful thing to do in this situation.

Staying in your Higher Observational Self allows you to acknowledge and validate them, and to hold space for their feelings, while remaining detached from the drama. You are able to be supportive and help lead in the situation.

In order to do this, I have learned a few ways to protect my energy that I’d like to share with you.

1. Morning Prayer

Every morning I say a quick prayer for protection of health, physical form, energetic field for me and my loved ones. Generally I do this after brushing my teeth, and I typically say something like: “Let only that which is to the highest good of all people in all places enter my energy and support me today. May this blessing also extend to all of my loved ones.”

2. Epsom salt baths/foot soaks

I love taking baths. It can be such a beautiful ritual to cleanse and release. I bring all my crystals, light a candle, and set an intention to be renewed. It also feels wonderful on the muscles and just sings self-love. I love adding Epsom salt as well because it adds a detoxifying and purifying element.

3. Taking a shower and scrubbing away the weird feelings

In deep seasons of depression, taking a shower is always my go-to activity. It gives me an activity for 20 minutes or so, and I can generally use it to shift my mindset. I love playing sound healings on my speaker and treating every shower I take as a baptism. I set the intention to wash myself not only physically, but spiritually, and energetically as well. I envision that which does not serve me being scrubbed off and washing down the drain.

4. Brushing my teeth

If I don’t have time for a full shower, I like to take that same cleansing, scrubbing, baptismal energy of a shower and apply it to brushing my teeth. I may say my prayer and set the intention to be cleansed and protected. I like to extend the imagery to thinking about how toothpaste strengthens and protects your teeth to imaging myself and my energetic field being similarly fortified.

5. Washing/Sanitizing my hands

If I am in a place where I can’t shower or brush my teeth, I once again take that same cleansing, scrubbing, baptismal energy of either and apply it while washing or sanitizing my hands. This is my go-to when I am out in public (at the grocery store, in my car, at the bank, etc). If I have an interaction that leaves me feeling unbalanced, a few squirts of my lavender essential oil infused sanitizer, the intention to be cleansed and protected, and a few deep breaths goes far in bringing me back to equilibrium.

I hope that you find these to be helpful suggestions! I would love to hear which you’re going to try first! Leave me a comment below! ❤
